The WSJ tells us today:
“According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes.”
That’s right folks. 11 minutes. What’s going on the rest of the time?
Commercials – 1 hour
Shots of players huddling, standing at the line of scrimmage or just generally milling about between snaps – 75 minutes
The rest of the time is the random stuff you see like replays, cheerleaders, crowd, etc.
What’s really interesting about this? You know all those concussions we talked about?
They all happen in just 11 minutes.
I continue to contend that football is a brutal game I cannot support. Read this post for more reasons why.

Holy cow, I don’t know what to say… No wonder I always get bored watching football. Even during the minuscule time the ball is moving, it moves so fast I can’t follow it, so I don’t even get to enjoy that minuscule time. Wow.
I saw this today too and thought it was really interesting. My favorite was that more time was used to show injured athletes laying on the ground than of players celebrating-or even of cheerleaders.
I know, huh? I wonder if that's why football players make less money than other professionals?
I prefer baseball and football to basketball, but I'll bet the basketball players feel ripped off when you compare pay per actual hour of playing time.
That's a good point. I wonder if the difference is compensation for risk?
