Winner: Cure Worse Than the Disease Award
Also, winner of the most awful thing you could probably say/do to a woman award. Seriously, this quote is damaging on so many levels, I don’t know where to begin.
For background, read the article in the Wall Street Journal that I found it in (subscription required).
Basically, it’s about how people found smoking by women abhorrent in early America. So, the tobacco companies fought back with slogans meant to attract women.
Now, without further ado, here it is:
“You can’t hide fat, clumsy ankles. When tempted to overindulge, reach for a Lucky.”

Hmmm… I wouldn’t think that would be the worst thing to say to a woman… I’m not sure what the worst thing WOULD be… but if I were a man… I’d rather be around a woman with fat ankles than around a woman with cigarette breath.
