There’s a movie coming out in September called “September Dawn”. It purports to tell the true story of the “Mountain Meadows Massacre”. What it does, instead, is tell lies about the Church and Brigham Young.
In September’s Ensign, there is an article by Richard E Turley, Jr., who is the Managing Editor of the Church History Department. It is the most honest, accurate account I have read and I’ve read a few of them.
This certainly isn’t the first time somebody has tried to exploit the Church or one of it’s leaders or members for personal gain and it definitely won’t harm the Church in any material way, but I think it would be irresponsible of me to not try to promulgate a factual account of the matter, if the opportunity presents itself. In fact, I think it would be wonderful if we could turn the questions this movie is bound to present into a missionary experience for those asking the questions. What better way to thwart the selfish designs of a few greedy people?
Maybe we should send them a “thank you” note…
