Gay marriage has become an important issue in the US and an especially confounding one for conservatives. It’s interesting to me to watch conservatives try to argue against gay marriage. Frankly, they are having a difficult time coming up with legal reasons not to allow gay marriage without bringing religion into the question.
Before I get ahead of myself, I want to put forth a couple of important beliefs of mine. Please note, these are not at odds with one another.
I support gay people. I believe they are our brothers and sisters and deserve as much respect as their choices allow (i.e., if they live a respectable life, they deserve resepect). I believe that regardless of the gender to whom they feel attracted, they should be held to the same standard as anybody else. Frankly, I don’t feel like they are different from any of us.
I believe homosexuality is wrong. However, just like with any other person that does something I disagree with, I can be tolerant of this behavior and still love the person who committs the wrong. If I had a child and she had the habit of kicking the puppy every day (not that homosexuality is like kicking puppies), I wouldn’t hate my child or make her feel like a horrible person. I would, however, try to teach her why kicking puppies is wrong.
Anyway, conservatives now find themselves backed into a corner. As a nation, we have allowed our religious beliefs to be outlawed as the basis of law. So, by allowing the foundation of our legal system to be removed, we find ourselves without support. Now, when issues such as gay marriage confront us, conservatives are stuck trying to do what they think is right without being able to say why they think it is right.
My take is that there is no longer a legal reason to not allow gay marriage. Because we cannot argue on religious grounds, we are stuck with science. Since homosexuality is still in it’s infancy (no pun intended), essentially, there isn’t enough reliable data available that goes back long enough to study the effects of a homosexual family on children, communities, etc. So, we are left floundering in the wind with one side, homosexuals, clearly having a legal advantage, the other side having the moral advantage but without the means by which to avail themselves of it.
That being said, I take great comfort in the fact that there is a prophet on the Earth today who can receive revelation from Heavenly Father and let us know what He wants us to do. You can read his (His) take here (scroll to question 2) and here.

You make some excellent and well-articulated points. It certainly is a hot topic these days. Thanks for the link to the interview with Pres. Hinkley! I love reading reading those – he is truly inspired and never fails to uplift me.
So – now that you’ve identified the lack of moral responsibility in our government, what to do about it? Hmmmm…
Thanks m for posting this, its got some great arguments about this issue and why we seem to have a hard time addressing it.
